Sofie Update - We end the week with some good news - we have found a foster home for Goose - woohoo!

Goose will be going into foster care with a family that adopted a dog quite a few years ago(5?) - her name is Peanut and from what we hear, she has grown into a very big girl! We are thrilled and excited for Goose and can't wait for pictures and updates when he arrives in foster care the weekend after this.

We also received a picture from Sofie's family. Here is our little girl checking out a new foal.

It looks like wee Sofie has a great time looking after all of her animal friends. What a great picture!

Hi Renee: Congratulations on finding a foster home for Goose, such good news. Also, on finding the forever home for Bentley. He is such a beautiful looking Rottie, but all Rotties are beautiful. Keep up the good work! Take care. ~Anne & Wayne

Bentley Has Left the Building - Well, we are happy to say that our little man Bentley has been adopted! We had many nice applications come in for Bentley - more than we are used to seeing for any one single dog.

We proceeded the applications and not once, not twice, but three times we got through the entire process and the only thing left was for approved applicants to meet Bentley and 3 times they changed their mind prior to meeting our little man. Poor Bentley!

Finally, we received an application in that we completed and all that was left was the meeting ... we had everything crossed that this time, it would finally happen for Bentley. Arrangements were made to meet Bentley on Monday morning ... then the weather forecast - yikes! NO WAY was this meeting going to happen! But it did ... his family was so excited to finally meet him that they carefully took the road trip to meet Bentley's foster home. It was "love at first sight".  Congratulations Bentley, Jodi and family! Here is a picture of Bentley with his new family and what his new mom has to say:

Hi Carolina, We made it home safely. The traffic was more if an issue than the weather on way home. He has already made us laugh and been an absolute joy to be with.

Thank you for sending us our first picture and taking such good care of Bentley. We will definitely stay in touch! ~Jodi

We are thrilled to say that our Bentley Boy is now adopted!

Bentley Update - Well, today is the big day for Bentley! If weather permits, the family will be traveling a fair distance to come and meet Bentley. We have EVERYTHING crossed that Bentley has finally found his forever family. Unfortunately, the weather forecast isn't sounding too promising, but we will see! (-:

We are still desperately seeking a foster home for this sweet, silly boy. He is getting urgent now so please - if you know of anyone that can help by offering Goose a soft place to fall, please contact us immediately.

We also have an update - this weekend Goose was tested with dogs - all were larger breeds, but Goose was so excited to meet them and all he wanted to do was play, play, play!

Goose also met a young 5 year old as well and was very excited to see this young child as well. He was quite excited and a bit jumpy, but all he wanted to do was kiss the youngster. No doubt once he is out of the shelter, he would soon settle down, but right now, Goose is SO happy to meet everyone, 2 legged and 4.

Once again, Goose is urgent, so please contact us if you think you can help Goose.

Doris Beatrice Bonell - We are honoured to have been chosen to receive donations in loving memory of Doris Beatrice Bonello, a lifelong lover of animals, although we are very sad for the circumstance. In lieu of flowers, donations to ANML-RESQ Network of Ontario or the charity of choice has been requested.

Doris' daughter, Beverley, shared with us how her parents respect and love of animals have impacted the family throughout their lives as well. Here is a tribute from Beverley to her mother...

"I'm 50 this year, have always had a dog, along with cats and a guinnea pig. Mom always helped me nurse victim birds of our cats, knowing full well what the result would be, but knowing that compassion for animals was to be encouraged. We NEVER had a pure bred.. dad crossed picket Line in the 70s to get a dog he'd seen on a Humane Society visit....he Did not believe in crossing picket lines, but to save a dog he did.

They also staked out another THS because the guy there said the dog he wanted wasn't ready for adoption, then saw someone else looking at him... they got there at dawn of release day to get her... they were in the door first... she led a great 14 years with us. Mom stayed up all night watching the stray cat she'd set up in the garage, birthing her kittens... a real learning experience for us! You remember my concern when Jay came to live with them. He's turned out to be the love of their lives... he's adorable and loving... because of the love Mom and Dad taught him to give. So Sandy, Sandy, Mike, Mickey, Tippy, Misty, Maggie and Jay had some pretty awesome parents. :) "

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Doris Bonello's family as they go through this very sad and difficult time.

Please Network Goose - We end the week with a picture of our sweetheart Skye ... the little princess that she is - resting comfortably.

Life is so good, isn't it Skye?

Also, just a reminder that we are desperately seeking a foster home for our silly "Goose". He is just a puppy and we would love to see him playing and romping in a yard, having fun and being a part of a family. Right now we need a foster home for this silly boy so we can get him vetted and settled into foster care and get to know him a little better. Please consider helping this young boy get out of the shelter and enjoy life in a family situation until we can find his forever family.

We also have EVERYTHING crossed for our handsome boy, Bentley. We have completed the application process for a wonderful family and the last step will be the meeting! (-: So please send postive thoughts Bentley's way!

We also thought we'd include a few interesting links for you as we end off the week.

  2. Can dogs feel guilt?

  3. 7 Mistakes you're making in behavior modification

RIP Karl - It breaks my heart, once again to have to tell you we have lost another one of our dearest, sweetest senior rescues...our beloved Karl crossed over the Bridge last night with his loving Debbie and Derek by his side. Karl had an exceptionally good day yesterday as often happens with our seniors. Last night he took a turn for the worse and was rushed to the hospital where he was gently allowed to cross over. We will always remember you Karl. Run free and we know you will continue to watch over your loving family, until you meet again.

Click to enlarge...Click to enlarge...Click to enlarge...

Our thoughts and prayers are with Debbie and Derek as they go through this difficult time. When Karl was rescued, he was 10 years old and lived a life as a "guard dog". Lucky for Karl, he made his final attempt at escaping a life he hated and took his chances going to a shelter. Sadly, older dogs don't often get second chances - especially with a "questionable history" like Karls'.

However, that did not deter Debbie from contacting us and offering him a wonderful home to call his own. We were elated when we found Debbie and Derek. With all the love he received from this loving family, Karl enjoyed 5 wonderful and very memorable years. We are so grateful for that.

The Old Ones

One by one they pass my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his prime he can't run and play,
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail,
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face and I finally had hope.
You saw through the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond the cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly and want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
I promise to return all the love I can give,
To You, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

My heart is broken :( I remember transporting Karl, like it was just yesterday. He was such a love muffin. So gentle and snuggly. I'm so sorry Debbie & Derek xoxo ~ Ali

First of all thank you. Only a special type of family takes in a older dog like Karl and loves them so much that they live to be 15. WOW!!!! I am so sorry for what feels like a hole in your heart but its not a hole, its your heart stretching because it is getting so big with the animals that you are so loving. May your days get easier Debbie knowing that beautiful Karl loved you and Derek more than life itself. You had better wear body gear when you meet him at the Bridge because he for sure will be bragging about his family to all the other pups and you for sure will get bowled over. ~Mim

I am very broken inside right now ........... this was one of the very first emails that we received about Karl, I kept it, saved in my fav's as was he ........ my "Carter" of shepherd world.

Many dogs have come and gone through all of our rescues but a very few have truly touched me the way Karl did, forever part of me, forever part of one of my bragging stories when reminiscing about why we do rescue, Karl is one of those very reasons, rest well my friend. He is re-united with Debbie Groves whom of which we recently lost as well, she loved this big fella too and was the initial one that contacted Joy to find him rescue. He has a big fan club to say the least!

Debbie/Derek, my heart goes out to you, nothing hurts worse than this ....... in time the pain will not be as raw but you never truly get over the special ones, I keep saying give me 10 years and I'll be over it ......... still hasn't happened, anything you need you say the word, I drive right thru Acton 6 days a week if you need a shoulder, love you guys. ~Beth

Please accept my deepest condolences. I know … there are no words to mend hearts. I remember him vividly. In fact, I remember him more so than most rescues. My gosh, I remember Debbie from the shelter showing me this hulk of a dog. So regal in his cage. Approached gingerly but you could sense the power and the wisdom in this boy. I remember seeing that dreaded tag on him. I knew that our chances of getting him to a rescue was next to nil. I remember the company picking him up, and I remember Debbie telling me ‘he’s back’. Several times in fact. I remember the last time.. mysteriously that tag was not around his neck, and this gave us the opportunity to try and help this boy. I remember contacting Beth and Renee and Sharon about him. I remember them saying ‘send him’. I remember Debbie and I rejoicing as this by far was the most epic rescue EVER. Rare in every way. I remember Renee informing Debbie and myself that Karl was being adopted. I remember how amazed Debbie and I were to see pictures of Karl in his new home with REAL parents …. and he was loved. WOW! Debbie my dearest of friends passed away recently. I know for a fact, that she was there to greet Karl. I know this because she passed on St-Francis Saint of the Animals…it was not only fitting but it is very obvious to me, that there was a reason she left this earth on that particular day. She will be there to continue to love Karl and there is no doubt in my mind he is shining like he always did. God Bless you all, and thank you so very very much for embracing this boy. Best to you All. Strength and Peace. ~Joy

My heart goes out to Debbie & Derek for the loss of their beloved Karl. He was extremely lucky to have been able to live out his golden years in such a wonderful and loving home. ~Christine

Meet Goose - My name is Goose, and I am a male,10 month old, Dogo Argentino/Bull Terrier mix, I am a wiggly, bouncy, friendly boy who loves people! I urgently need a foster home so that a rescue can take me into their care. They say I will get my shots, a microchip and be neutered before I go to my forever family. I don't exactly know what that means but it sounds like fun and I'm a super fun guy!

A nice lady came to see me to take my picture and we had a little play date. I am going to need some training on my manners but don't worry, I showed her in just a few short minutes that I listen well. She said I was very smart to be catching on so quickly!

I have lots of energy so if you have a fenced in yard that will be great! We can play fetch! You might have to teach me to bring the ball back though :D I think I would make a pretty good jogging or running buddy too because I love to be by someone's side.

These nice people haven't had the chance to see me with other dogs and cats but being a young pup I think I could certainly handle having some friends. Even if it means letting them teach me appropriate ways to greet and play with them.

Can I come to your house? If you think I can, please contact the nice people at ANML-RESQ and let them know you want to take me home!

Tuffy Who? - Introducing our newest arrival, Tuffy! HUGE thanks to Jen and Josh for taking this beautiful boy into their home.

Tuffy had an eventful day yesterday. He was neutered and surgery was a bit more complicated as one of his testicles hadn't dropped. But after a good nights sleep, Jen tells me he is looking much better and enjoying his recuperation time with Jen, Josh and Jimmy.

Many thanks to Garry (Ozzie's dad) for asking us for help. We are thrilled to be a part of finding Tuffy a wonderful forever family. Welcome Tuffy!!

RIP Dakota - It is with a heavy heart that we have to tell you that our sweetheart Dakota has crossed the Bridge.

Sadly, when she arrived in foster care back in 2012 she had a skin condition which caused her much discomfort. We tried everything to help her, to no avail. Even though Dakota was feeling uncomfortable in her skin, she flourished in her foster home. She adored being a part of the family and Dakota's foster family adored her very much. In the past couple of months, Dakota had been declining. She seemed to be in constant pain and soon even her pain medication protocol was not working.

It broke her foster mom's heart to see her little girl in constant pain. Sadly, the time had come to say goodbye to her sweet Dakota. Dakota is no longer in pain and discomfort ... she is now at peace. We know she lived a wonderful life with Jen and her family and for that we are grateful.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jen, Josh and Jimmy at this very difficult time. We know it is never easy to say "good-bye". Rest in Peace little Dakota. You will always be remembered by your friends and family at ANML-RESQ.

Age Old Question Answered - I'm going to end the week with some links I thought you might find interesting. Grab a coffee and enjoy!

And, now we all know the answer to this very important question LOL. I wonder if the same reasoning applies to finding the perfect spot to lay? Lady is not happy with the comforters on the floor (left for their comfort and convenience). Nope ... that's not good enough for my girlie ... she must steal all the blankets she can from the couches and a pillow or two if she can get away with it ... drops everything on the comforters and spins in circles until things are "just right" lmao! I really need to get video of that sometime (not sure if my camera will do that or not) (-;

Anyway, here is the answer to that age old question every dog owner asks themselves why dogs turn in circles to find the perfect poo spot! lol

Another good read is when Raising a Puppy, Grumpy Uncles are Good, But Not Perfect

There have been so many lost and missing dogs lately and it isn't always easy getting them to come back to you, even if you are their owner.

Christmas Gift - I have to fill you in on some of our adoptions and I want to start with Tyson. We were very thrilled to find a forever home for our beautiful boy Tyson. We were all thrilled to know that Tyson would be spending Christmas in a home rather than a kennel. Unfortunately the ice-storm hit and Tyson and family were left in the dark for the first week (almost).

Tyson is Adopted!

As new dad Brent said ..."poor Tyson - excited to get into a home environment only to be thrown into the dark and cold )-: However Tyson made the best of a bad situation, as did his family and they had plenty of time to get to know each other. Congratulations Tyson, Brent and family! We hope to get updates and pictures soon.

We were also thrilled to hear that our sweetheart Skye had found her forever home too! It began when I asked Skye's foster mom for some new pictures so we could post her on the newsletter. I got a quick response over email - one word ... NO! Well, I know Debbie is always joking around so I was about to email her back and ask her "what gives". However the phone wrang so I went to answer the phone when I heard a very tearful Debbie on the other end. She told me when she received my email asking for pictures, the reality had finally hit her. She knew how much her husband Derek adored Skye.

He took her to work with him everyday and most times you would find Skye and Derek cuddled together on the couch. Debbie decided that she couldn't tear these two apart so she asked me not to put her on the newsletter and not to change her status on the website. She wanted to wait until after Christmas before the news was made official. The reason for the delayed announcement? Well, Christmas morning (power was still out) but Debbie asked Derek to come join her in the family room. When he entered the room he saw Skye with a big bow wrapped around her neck. Merry Christmas Daddy! I'm ALL yours! There were tears of joy from Derek, who embraced his girl and gave her the biggest hug. She was finally his!

For those of you who remember Skye's story, you will also realize that this is Skye's 2ND Christmas Miracle and she is now forever home to stay! Things happen for a reason ... Skye was definitely meant to find Debbie and Derek and we are so very happy for Skye and her wonderful family.

Skye is of course loved by her fur-brother Karl and Oscar Meyer (who prefers to hang out with his smaller doggie siblings) and felines.

Congratulations Skye, proud papa Derek and Debbie from all your friends at ANML-RESQ! Two very lucky black and tan furkids!!

Video 2013 - Happy New Year everyone - from all of us here at ANML-RESQ Network of Ontario.

It has been quite a year, not only in rescue but also with some pretty catastrophic weather here in Ontario. The ice storm, that hit two weeks ago has been devastating to so many and our thoughts are with everyone who had their power off for so many days. Holiday time is stressful enough without having to deal with keeping warm and eating.

We at ANML-RESQ are grateful for all the dogs we were able to help this past year. We could not have done it without your help and kind support ... our volunteers, transporters, foster homes and fundraisers. And all our wonderful adoptive homes and fantastic friends, near and far - thank you!

We wish you a very happy and healthy 2014 and look forward to seeing you all this coming year. We are proud to share our Happily Homed Dogs of 2013 with you all. Click here to enjoy...»

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and New Years! Now, it's back to the old grind! lol
